We ate at Hops & Hominy after a long day of travel. Even at 8:30 at night, there was a 45 minute wait. Luckily, a spot opened up at the bar and they serve a full menu. Service was great, food hit the spot. From the moment we sat down, they brought out warm cornbread to start. We started with pretzel bites (small and delicious), and ordered the catch of the day (halibut) and shrimp and grits. Next time, I'm going for the fried chicken!

Gotta get the mac and cheese any time you're there. Love the hole in the wall exposed brick and the service is fast. Definitely will be back!

Wonderful food, service, and cocktails. It gets crowded so I recommend making a reservation. Fried chicked is great, but my favorite thing was the fried oysters. They are just so good! I would make a meal out of just them if given the option.

Loved it. Good atmosphere, busy and lively. Food is good and has good southern flavours. Had fried oysters and wings. Both really good, but the complementary corn bread brought it over the top. Would go back for sure.

Very nice food and drinks. A somewhat modern take on southern food, which was quite nice!

Ate here while on vacation at the recommendation of a friend who lives in SF. I liked that the food had all the comfort of Southern fare without feeling heavy and super bad for you. We ate family style to try a bunch of dishes. The two proteins of fried chicken and pork chop were hearty pieces of meat and tasty. Arugula salad really cut through the fried foods and was a good, clean pairing. I also enjoyed the whiskey drinks they made.

Cute, hipster-ish small gastro pub has great beers, sandwiches and absolutely delicious cornbread.I'm a little torn as my pulled pork sandwich was ok, but not much more - the bread was too chewy, the pork tasted like it was reheated from a while ago, though the slaw was good. I'll definitely come back to try the burgers, as they had a much better look.

Great place to eat that's off the beaten path, but still close to downtown and Union Square. Not an extensive menu (which is a good thing), but a delicious tasting selection of food and drinks.

Great service and homey environment if eating on your own. Booked on Open Table and was placed at Chef's Table which is a counter that looks into the kitchen and can seat 3. It wqs perfect for me since I was by myself. The hostess, kitchen staff and waiters are interacted with me and it was a very positive experience. Food was delicious. I had the brussel sprouts with bacon, the mini cornbread loaf, and a ginger beer.

Delicious southern style cooking in the heart of San Francisco. Nice selection of craft beers and cocktails and their food choices are not what you'll find in the rest of the city, and I mean that in the most positive way. From the salads to the fried chicken, everything was delicious and Eve, our server, was very attentive. Wish I'd left room for dessert. Next time.

In need of a good craft beer and burger, I headed to Hops & Hominy. It’s a bit quiet during the day, so there was a sedate but welcoming vibe. There’s some interesting craft beers on tap and a short food menu that had many tasty bites. I had the impossible burger and an IPA, so mission accomplished.

My wife and I were on vacation and found this cozy place in San Fran. We were not disappointed. They said they were known for chicken which my wife had with mash potatoes and it was delicious. I went with the ribs with potato salad and they were the best I'd ever had. Lots of meat on the bone with no fat and a very flavorful BBQ sauce(sweet & smoky) that stays with you long after...and that's a good thing! They also start with some yummy corn bread with excellent service all around.

There is something about restaurants on alleyways off the main beat that makes them even better...less crowded, better quality, not as overrun with tourists. Hops & Hominy is one of those places. Absolutely delicious, fresh ingredients. And their chipotle "hopsauce" (hot sauce) REALLY packs an awesome kick to go with their spicy chicken sandwich. It's even for sale! Totally recommended for a light lunch alone, or a quiet date night. Just DELICIOUS food!!

Been here many many times. Excellent service, great southern influenced comfort food with some healthier San Francisco posed options on the menu. Great cocktails, rotating beer selection with local drafts and often updated wine list. Fried chicken is the thing to get here, but today I went with a selection of appetizers. Super delicious soup of the day, ham croquettes and chicken wings. All very tasty!

My husband and I happened to find this place and we are so happy that we did. It was a tad confusing trying to find the entrance but I think that is only because of the location we were walking from. Once inside our waiter was very inventive. We split the Hops and Hominy burger and an order of mac n cheese. It was more than enough for lunch.

Good southern style cooking. Recommend the Pork-chops and the Fried Chichen. Service is great, and though they take reservations, I've usually been able to get in with enough wait to get a drink at their bar. Also, bartenders and good here. Eating at the Bar is an option.

Great place. Service is incredible and they NAIL the cornbread and biscuits which is unfortunately not always a given. As someone from the south I approve.

This gem has a fantastic menu and great drinks. Cool vibes fill the space. I very much enjoyed the cornbread, lamb cheeks over white grits which came with root veggies, and the broccolini. The bread pudding was quite underwhelming. Though it was freshly made, it lacked sweetness and cohesive flavor. The fried chicken is also highly rated.

This place is okay. The food is pretty good, the atmosphere is nice and the service is quick. The main thing they need to improve is the cocktail menu - nothing I’ve ordered has been nearly worthy of a $14 price. The cocktails taste amateur and cheap.

Came here at 6pm on a Thursday and was pretty full - was told we could get a table but needed to leave at 720 (which was fine)Food was very good - they serve a corn bread with whipped honey butter and that was absolutely delicious. We also had the ribs, pork chop and ribs and again very impressed.Only problem was service wasn't so great, not horrible just not that good either.Still would recommend trying

Ah another restaurant I really like, albeit a bit pricey - like most SF restaurants. There's just way too many in San Francisco. I love that there's a good happy hour selection. Great appies ranging from fried oysters, to hearty salads, and also delicious Mac and Cheese! It was so good - the oysters were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside but not squishy. The Mac and cheese was very cheesy with a breading on top.My favorite cocktails are the Gin and Jam and Bees Knees. The mix was not overly sweet and overpowering. The Bees Knees drink came in an adorable bears glass, and also I could even taste a subtle roses from the rose they used as the garnish of mixed into the drink. There's also a beer, wine and dessert wines selection.Would come back.

One of the best southern comfort foods I’ve had in a while. I always love free bread and here you get cornbread as an appetizer!!!! If that isn’t enough, the chicken + honey entree I ordered was delicious. We also ordered Mac&cheese to share and we also devoured it. On a day you want to ignore being healthy, I definitely recommend this place. So good!

The shrimp and grits are very tasty but perhaps a bit small for a full meal. Make sure to try their house made hot sauce. Very savory but not very spicy. You can still taste your food with it. We also had an impossible burger that was as generic as could be. A better burger would have made this a 5 star visit. Very friendly service too and a nice ambiance.

We made reservations in advance to visit this place a good hour before it closes only to find out that they were already closing and couldn't accommodate our reservation after we get there. On top of it all the host seemed irritated for having us there even if it was for a min for her to tell us they are closed without any apologies for inconveniences. Didn't feel welcomed to go back and try!

I was really excited about coming here. We made reservations a few days head of time for dinner and was promptly seated on arrival. The menu is small. You're served a skillet cornbread. We shared a beet salad, there was way too much leafy greens and not enough beets. The best dish of the night was their fried chicken. Both the hook and line fish and the shrimp and grits was disappointing. The fish was very bland and a bit on the fishy side. The serving size of the fish was also on the small side for $28. I think the shrimp and grits at Brenda's is way better. Then on to dessert, the freezer was broken so there was only one item we could order. All in all good service, average food.

I feel like I may be an outlier here, but I can't seem to enjoy this place as much as other do. I love the concept of this place, and I wanted to love it so bad because I wish there were more southern restaurants in SF. However.. I feel like every dish I've tried has been really disappointing, especially the fried chicken. I believe in the idea of having a place serve southern food but with sustainable, organic ingredients.. but Hops & Hominy isn't it.
